Recent legislation further sweetens bonuses to encourage providers to participate in electronic prescriptions - also known as E-Prescribing. As of January 1, 2009, there are actually two different incentive programs 1) PQRI and 2) the E-Prescribing Incentive Program. Providers may participate in both programs simultaneously.
All mental health providers will benefit from the common-sense approach and steps found in the Behavioral Health MultiBook. This book includes information and coding examples about both Medicare bonus programs for electronic prescriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions About PQRI
Q.
A.
Q. I'm a provider who does not have prescribing priviledges. How can I possibly document that medication was prescribed when it is outside my scope of practice?
A. You may still document that medication was prescribed even if you are not doing the prescribing. Your documentation merely indicates that medication was part of the recommended course of treatment.

There is an excellent document "A Clinician's Guide to Electronic Prescribing" presented by the eHealth Initiative Foundation along with several other professional organizations. Although published in 2008, it does an excellent job of outlining what you need to do and HOW to go about starting. Some of the information has changed since e-Prescribing was removed from the PQRI measures group in 2009, but those differences can be found in the 2010 Behavioral Health MultiBook.
